Facilities will be there for doctors to remain in rural areas: Zahid

DHAKA, Feb 12, 2019 (BSS) – Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid
Maleque said that the government would provide all facilities to keep doctors
on duty in rural areas, which was one of the challenges to achieve the
Sustainable Developmental Goals.

“It is a big challenge for us to keep doctors in rural areas to attain the
health related objectives of the SDG,” he said adding, “To ensure presence of
doctors in rural hospitals the government has taken a project to construct
dormitories for them and provide vehicles.”

He was speaking as chief guest at a meeting, ‘Goal of achieving SDG: Doings
of Health Sector’ at Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) auditorium. It was
also organised by the BMA.

BMA President Dr Mustafa Jalal Mohiuddin presided over the programme while
State Minister DR Murad Hasan, former President of National Press Club
Shafiqur Rahman MP, Secretary General Dr M Ehteshamul Huq Chowdhury and vice-
chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Prof Kanak Kanti
Barua were present, among others.

The Minister urged the officials to give more attention to the private
medical colleges and hospitals to improve the quality of their services.

Maleque suggested bringing all government hospitals under the surveillance
of strong monitoring system to ensure the presence of doctors.

He also said the government would take special measures for medical waste
management in all private and public hospitals.

“We want doctors would deliver their services freely and fairly with
sincerity, and they would not come under threat of outsiders or relatives for
death of any patient,” he said.

Other speakers at the meeting emphasized development of healthcare
services as it was closely related to other basic needs.

Diseases cannot be prevented without ensuring food as well as nutrition of
a person, they said, calling for continuation of public awareness about
sanitation and hygiene.

Attacks on doctors by relatives of patients were not expected but at the
same time every doctor should ensure the delivery of services to the patients
with a service-oriented mentality, they said.
