Bangla Academy for permanent ground for Ekushey Book fair

DHAKA, Feb 7, 2019 (BSS) – Bangla Academy today urged the government for allotting permanent ground or place for the month-long Ekushey Book fair, saying it will save huge construction cost of setting up different establishments.

Bangla Academy Director General Habibullah Shirajee made the call at a press conference on overall situation of the ongoing Ekushey Book fair on the academy premises here.

He said the academy sold out books of Taka 258,500 in the last six days, Taka 700,000 more compared to the same period of the last year. In the first six days of the last year’s book fair, books worth Taka 183,000 were sold out, he added.

The arrival of 161 new books was witnessed today raising the total number of new books at 832 on the seventh day of the fair.

Among the published books; 179 are on poetry, 134 on juvenile, 110 on fiction, 114 on short story, 66 on essay, 36 on science and 29 on Liberation War.

Besides, a discussion titled ‘Litterateur Scientist Mohammad Abdul: Birth Centenary’ was held at the main stage of the fair. Soumittro Shekhor presented a keynote paper on the topic while Maniruzzaman, Jinat Imtiaz Ali, Shahid Iqbal and Tarique Manjur took part in the discussion.
