33 thousand students vow to prevent social curses

RANGPUR, April 20, 2017 (BSS) – A total of 33 thousand students of 134
educational institutions in Taraganj upazila have vowed for preventing drug abuse, eve-teasing, militancy and child marriage from the society.

They took the vow at separate oath-taking ceremonies held
simultaneously at different secondary and higher secondary level educational institutions on Wednesday with the initiatives taken by Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Taraganj Thana Abdul Latif.

As a part of the exceptional programme, three thousand and 700 students of eight high schools, colleges and madrashas participated in one of the oath-taking ceremonies held at Ekorchali High School ground in the upazila.

OC Abdul Latif himself conducted the oath-taking ceremony of the
students who vowed for preventing drug abuse, eve-teasing, militancy and child marriage to build a peaceful, prosperous and developed Bangladesh.

Taraganj upazila Chairman Anisur Brahman, Senior ASP Arman Ali,
President of Upazila Secondary Teachers’ Association Saiful Islam, members of Upazila Drug Prevention Committee, public representatives, teachers and local elite were present.

At the same time, police officials and members of Upazila Drug
Prevention Committee conducted separate oath-taking ceremonies participated by 29 thousand and 300 students of 126 more educational institutions at different places in the upazila.

Talking to BSS, OC Abdul Latif said that hearing miseries of fathers, mothers, wives and children of five drug addicts after joining at Taraganj Thana in November, 2015 he took decision to free the upazila from drug use.

“Since then, I thought to free the upazila from drug abuse as well as social curses like child marriage, militancy and sexual harassment and shared my plans with upazila Chairman Anisur Rahman who instantly supported me,” he said.

“Later, we arranged series of meetings at all 45 wards in five unions with public representatives, Imams, Purohits, teachers, students, political leaders and workers, farmers and common people,” the OC said.

He said fifty ‘Drug and Child Marriage Prevention Committees’ were
formed in these meetings involving two thousand and 500 participants to create social awareness about negative impacts of drug, child marriage, eve-teasing and militancy.

“After forming the committees, we arranged dozens of awareness building meetings to make the common people aware about these social curses and conducted the oath-taking ceremonies for the students to achieve the goals,” Latif added.

After taking part in the oath-taking ceremony held at Ekorchali High
School, class even student Anamika Akhter said, “I would work now to root out negative impacts of child marriage, drug abuse, eve-teasing and militancy in the society.”

Talking to BSS, Taraganj upazila Chairman Anisur Rahman highly
appreciated the initiative and called upon other Officers-in-Charge and public representatives to follow his foot-steps to free the society from social curses.

President of Upazila Secondary Teachers’ Association Saiful Islam said the initiative would remain as an example to inspire the students as well as common people in preventing drug abuse, eve-teasing, child marriage and militancy.
