EU praises govt for resolving labour resentment in RMG sector

DHAKA, Jan 27, 2019 (BSS) – European Union (EU) has praised the government for taking initiative in resolving the labour resentment created on the affairs of lower wage of the readymade garment Industries.

European Union Ambassador Rensje Teerink made the appreciation as he called on State Minister for Labour and Employment Monnujan Sufian at the Secretariat here today.

During the meeting, the state minister conveyed the EU ambassador on quick publication of gazette on lower wage, formation of twenty-nine committee by the concerned ministry at country’s labour-intensive area for monitoring labour situation and launching of five-digit hot line to receive complains of the labours.

At the same time, the EU welcomed the government for taking initiatives to upgrade the living standard of the labours and ensure balanced and peaceful working environment, according to an official handout.

Highlighting various assistances provided by the EU for the workers of the garment sector, the state minister sought technical assistance from the EU for other sector which would help generating new employment.

The EU envoy expressed the hope that the EU will provide assistance to other sectors along with the RMG sector.

High officials of the ministry including Labour Secretary Afroza Khan and EU commercial advisor to Bangladesh Abu Sayed Belal, among others, attended the programme.
