Quader terms BNP’s decision of boycotting polls as suicidal

GAZIPUR, Jan 25, 2019 (BSS) – Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader today described BNP’s announcement of boycotting upcoming local government elections as suicidal for the party.

“After the defeat in the national election, BNP has fallen into a big crisis. The party has taken a suicidal decision by announcing of not taking part in the upcoming elections,” he told newsmen after visiting the construction works of Konabari flyover in the district.

Quader said BNP has become perplexed at the massive defeat in the parliamentary polls, so they are taking suicidal decisions now.

“It is BNP’s own decision whether the party will join the upcoming Dhaka North City Corporation and upazila parishad polls. But if they do not take part in the elections, they will suffer in the long run,” he observed.

About the construction of Konabari flyover, the Road Transport and Bridges Minister expressed his optimism that the construction works of Chandra and Konabari flyovers in the district will end by April next to ease vehicular movement from Joydebpur to Elenga.

“The construction of rail over-bridges at Latifpur under Kaliakair upazila and Dherua in Tangail district has been completed. Hopefully, we can open Konabari and Chandra flyovers and Latifpur and Dherua rail over-bridges for vehicular movement before next Ramadan,” he said.

He said the government has signed an agreement with a Chinese firm to upgrade 190-kilomiter road from Elenga to Rangpur to a four-lane highway via Hatikumrul at a cost of Taka around 12,000 crore under the South Asia Sub-regional Economic Cooperation (SASEC) Road Connectivity Project-II to make smooth the road communication between the capital and the northern districts.

He said under SASEC Road Connectivity Project-III, the highway from Panchagarh to Burimari border under Lalmonirhat district will be upgraded to a four-lane. Works are underway to upgrade 70 kilometer Joydebpur-Chandra-Tangail-Elenga highway to a four-lane as part of the SASEC) Road Connectivity Project.

The minister said from Gazipur to entire northern region will be brought under four-lane highway facilities under the SASEC project.

Deputy Commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan Police Azad Miah and Superintending Engineer, Dhaka (circle office) Md Sabuj Uddin Khan were present on the occasion, among others.

Later, the minister also visited Kashimpur Central Jail-1 in the district.
