SUNAMGANJ, April 18, 2017 (BSS) – President M Abdul Hamid yesterday visited different haor areas of Kishoreganj, Netrakona and Sunamganj districts where majority of people are now facing hardship following the flashflood caused by the onrush of water from Indian hills.
“The President visited some badly flashflood affected areas of Itna, Baniarchar, Ganiganj, Khaliajhuri, Diari, Jamalganj, Shalla, Tahirpur, Dharmapasha and Chhatak areas by a helicopter yesterday, on the second day of his three-day visit in haor region,” President’s press secretary Joynal Abedin told reporters in the afternoon.
Earlier, President Abdul Hamid also visited some areas of Kishoreganj after leaving Dhaka yesterday and gave a patient hearing to the flashflood victims last night with the assurance of providing all necessary supports from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The President was informed by Kishoreganj district administration that as many as 99,368 farmers of seven upazilas have become the worst victims due to the inundation this year, where the estimated loss of rice production is about 1.37 tonnes and Taka 549.48 crore.
Sunamganj Deputy Commissioner Sheikh Rafiqul islam informed the President that the early flashflood damaged about 82 percent of cultivatable croplands of the district affecting about 2.71 lakh farmers’ livelihood as they (farmers) depend on the Boro paddy as their only means of livelihood.
Locals said early flashfloods have created a double blow for the livelihood at the haor after the flash flood devastated acres of paddy just weeks ahead of the annual harvest season.
