Disaster, relief ministry provides job to 3.87cr people

DHAKA, Dec 13, 2018 (BSS) – Disaster management and relief ministry provided jobs to 3.87 crore people in the last 10 years under its social safety net programmes.

“The government has also provided support to women empowerment and raised their financial capacity,” Deputy Principal Information Officer Dewan Omar Faruque told BSS today.

He said during the period rural poverty was reduced as 78 lakh rural unemployed people were provided job under the 80-day Employment Generation Programme for the Poorest (EGPP).

According to the ministry, the government implemented various projects worth Taka 4,166.33 crore along with distributing 20.31 lkah tonnes of food grains among 1.62 crore rural workers under Kabikhah/Kabita programmes for construction and repairing of rural roads.

It said in the last 10 years, the government implemented various projects at a cost of Taka 4,325.31 crore and 20.54 lakh tonnes of food grains engaging 1 crore 74 lakh 30 thousand rural workers under Test Relief (TR) aimed at ensuring rural infrastructure sustainable.

Due to the effective humanitarian assistance programmes taken by the present government, no people suffered from food crisis.

Under the government’s Humanitarian Assistance Programme, in the last 10 years, the government distributed foods worth of Taka 2,527.97 crore among 6.33 crore beneficiaries and Taka 193.24 crore among 1 crore 9 lakh 76 thousand beneficiaries, Omar Faruque said.

He said corrugated iron worth of Taka 365 crore was distributed among 20.50 lakh natural affected people for constructing their houses and Taka 102 crore as constriction charge.

Besides, the government ensured food security worth of Taka 8,778.48 crore of 12.9 crore marginalized poor people under Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF) programme during the last 10 years and distributed blankets worth of Taka 224.50 crore among 46.64 lakh destitute and cold hit poor people, the ministry information said.

In 2017, the government provided Taka 500 and 30 kg of food grains per month to 3.80 lakh flash flood affected families for 13 months, while the people affected by landslide at hilly areas were given Taka 1 crore, 1,100 tonnes of rice, 500 bundle corrugated iron sheets and cash Taka 15 lakh for repairing their houses.
