GAIBANDHA, Dec 10, 2018 (BSS) – The International Human Rights Day-2018
was celebrated in the district as elsewhere in the country today with a call
to promote awareness and protect the human rights of people.

This year’s theme of the day is “Stand Up For Human Rights”.

Marking the day, Abalamban Foundation, a local voluntary organization,
chalked out elaborate programmes in cooperation with UNDP.

In the morning, a human chain was formed on the DB Road at Kachari Bazaar
area of the district town with the participation of the Adibashi and the
Dalits.

Later, a discussion meeting was also held at the press club here with
human rights activist Waziur Rahman Raphel in the chair.

Advocate Sirajul Islam Babu, journalists Gobinda Lal Das and KM Rezaul
Haque, human rights worker Quazi Abdul Khalegue, female leaders Afroza Begum
Lupu and Anjali Rani Debi, adibashi leader Prisila Murmu, and Dalit leader
Khilan Robidas addressed the meeting, among others, while executive director
of Abalamban Probir Chakrabartee moderated the function.

The speakers in their speech said in most cases the minority people come
under attack and they do not get justice.

They tried to draw attention of the local administration and sought their
whole hearted cooperation so that the minority people of the society are not
attacked by miscreants and terrorists during the upcoming general polls to be
held on December 30.

They also underscored the need of all concerned to uphold the human rights
of people especially the vulnerable group — underprivileged women,
minorities, disabled persons, indigenous and dalits people.

A large number of people including indigenous and dalits, social workers
and media men participated in the programme.
