Expanding legal aid to rural distressed victims stressed

RAJSHAHI, Dec 31, 2017 (BSS)- Speakers at a function noted that the legal
aid privileges should be expanded to the rural level poor and distressed
litigants instead of only the urban ones.

They viewed that many rural helpless litigants deprived of proper justice
as they don’t have access to any legal aid services and other necessary
counseling.

The observation came at a discussion styled “Awareness Building on Law and
Human Rights in the Society” marking a daylong “BLAST Fair-2017” held at
Kasiadanga College playground under Paba Upazila of the district on Saturday.

Rajshahi district unit of Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST)
organised the fair aimed at making its free of cost legal aid services pro-
people and expedited along with creating mass-awareness in this regard.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Nasima Khatun addressed the discussion as
the chief guest with BLAST local unit president Advocate Nazmus Sadat in the
chair.

BLAST advisory committee members Dr Abu Zahid, Advocate Jamshed Ali and
Advocate Addus Samad, Principal of Kasiadanga College Golam Goush, human
rights activist Razia Sultana and BLAST local unit coordinator Advocate
Samina Begum also spoke.

Nasima Khatun lauded the BLAST for arranging such type of fair that will
help rural masses to get necessary information about the regal aid services
and human rights.

She said that entire people are equal to the eye of law so emphasis should
be given on bringing all the victimised people under the legal aid coverage
whatever and whenever they need.

She also underscored the need for collective efforts of all quarters to
ensure access to justice of the distressed and disadvantaged people
especially who live in villages.

All people are equal to the eye of law so emphasis should be given on
bringing all the poor and distressed litigants under the legal aid coverage
whatever and whenever they need.

The daylong fair comprises debate and art competition, poster and
publication display, drama on human rights and film show.
