US to do more to bring Rohingya solution: Bernicat

DHAKA, Oct 30, 2018 (BSS) – US Ambassador in Dhaka Mercia Bernicat today said her government is giving special attention to Rohingya crisis and will do more to bring a sustainable solution in this regard.

The outgoing US envoy came up with the assurance while paying her farewell call on Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali at the State Guest House Padma in the capital, said a press release of the Foreign Ministry.

Bernicat hoped that international community would keep up pressure on Myanmar to start Rohingya repatriation process at the soonest possible time.

During the meeting, Mahmood Ali congratulated her on successful completion of her assignment in Bangladesh.

He expressed deep appreciation of the role the US Ambassador played in further deepening ties between Bangladesh and the USA.

Bernicat highly appreciated the dynamic leadership and relentless efforts of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in ensuring remarkable socioeconomic development in Bangladesh.

She said Bangladesh has made a marked progress while Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has given the confidence to people to bring positive changes to their lives.

Bernicat assured that the US government would continue its support to Bangladesh in its journey towards progress and prosperity.

She said the US government is considering higher investment in energy sector of Bangladesh while some big US companies are showing interest to invest in its different potential sectors.

The trade volume between the two countries is also showing very positive trend in the last couple of years, the US envoy said.

With continuation of the current pace of trade and investment, she said, the relations between the USA and Bangladesh will be further cemented.

In the afternoon, Bernicat also paid farewell call on State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam at his office here.
