China to play positive role to solve Rohingya crisis: Zhao Kezhi

DHAKA, Oct 25, 2018 (BSS) – China today assured Bangladesh that it would play a “positive and constructive” role in solving the protracted Rohingya crisis.

The assurance came when Chinese State Councilor and Minister of Public Security Zhao Kezhi paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Ganbahaban here this evening.

PM’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed reporters after the meeting.

He said the Chinese minister also assured Bangladesh of providing necessary support to combat cyber crime.

“We’re ready to provide technical support to the Ministry of Home of Affairs of Bangladesh to fight cyber crime,” the press secretary quoted the Chinese minister as saying.

Zhao Kezhi highly appreciated Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for giving shelter to over 11 lakh forcibly displaced Rohingyas in Bangladesh on humanitarian grounds.

In reply, the prime minister urged the Chinese government to create pressure on Myanmar to take back its nationals from Bangladesh. “The Chinese initiative will help resolve the crisis,” she hoped.

Sheikh Hasina informed the Chinese minister that Bangladesh held discussion with Myanmar on the repatriation of the Rohingyas and Myanmar has agreed to take back its nationals from here. “But Myanmar doesn’t act accordingly,” she said.

Reiterating her government’s zero tolerance policy against terrorism and militancy, the prime minister said the government has contained the twin social menaces with iron hands and enacted the Digital Security Law to combat cyber crime.

Highly praising Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s leadership for developing the country, Zhao Kezhi said: “The nation’s dream of establishing Sonar Bangla will be materliazed under your leadership.”

The prime minister appreciated the Chinese ongoing cooperation for Bangladesh’s development.

Mentioning the inauguration of the world’s longest sea bridge in China, Sheikh Hasina described it as “amazing”.

In this connection, the prime minister said: “Bangladesh is a riverine country and we need construction of bridges on many rivers. For this we seek Chinese cooperation.”

While talking about investment in Bangladesh, the premier said the government has allocated land in the special economic zone for the Chinese entrepreneurs so that they can set up industries.

“We hope more Chinese entrepreneurs will come to Bangladesh by availing its investment-friendly atmosphere,” she said.

The Chinese minister said Beijing always supports Bangladesh’s independence and sovereignty. “We’ll also continue to extend our support for Bangladesh’s development,” she added.

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, PM’s Principal Secretary Md Nojibur Rahman, Inspector General of Police Dr Javed Patwary, PM’s Military Secretary Major General Mian Mohammad Zainul Abedin, Secretary, Public Security Division, Ministry of Home, Mostafa Kamal Uddin, Secretary, Security Service Division, Farid Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury were present, among others.
