78 fishermen jailed for catching hilsa in Manikganj

MANIKGANJ, Oct 14, 2018 (BSS) – Mobile courts in different upazila of the
district have sentenced 78 fishermen to different terms of jail for netting
hilsa defying a government ban on catching the national fish.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Harirumpur, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO)
of Shibalaya and Executive Magistrate of Daulatpur Upazila conducted a total
of 28 mobile courts at different points of Padma and Jamuna river and
sentenced 78 people to jail for catching hilsa defying the ban. Of them some
were awarded one year, some six month, some one month and some 20 days
imprisonment.

Dr. Md. Muniruzzaman, Manikganj district fisheries officer (DFO) told BSS
on Sunday, around 28 separate mobile courts have been conducted so far in the
district from the start of the hilsa ban. He added that a total of 84 special
drives were also conducted in different areas of the region.

During the drives, Tk 46,000 was realized as fine from the fishermen for
violation of law. A total of 21,72,000 meter net worth about Taka 5 crore and
1.15 metric tones of hilsa fish were seized.

The DFO said the seized nets were burnt and the fishes were distributed
among the destitute of the areas. Police patrol is continuing in the river
Padma and Jamuna, he added.
