DNCC by-polls in last week of February

DHAKA, Dec 18, 2017 (BSS) – The by-polls for the mayoral post of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) will be held in the last week of February next year (2018).

The Election Commission (EC) will announce the election schedule in the second week of January while the by-polls will be held in the last week of February in 2018, Acting Secretary of Election Commission Helal Uddin Ahmed told journalists at his office at Agargaon here yesterday.

The voting will also be held in 36 new wards and six reserved wards for women included newly in DNCC and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) on the same day, he said.

Helal said the polls schedule of the three elections (DNCC, 36 new wards and six reserved sits) will be announced on the same day.

The final voter lists will be published on January 31 in the next year, he said, adding the new voters would not be able to be candidates in the polls. Only the old voters would be able to contest in the polls.

DNCC mayor post fell vacant following the death of Annisul Huq on November 30 at a hospital in London where he was undergoing treatment.

According to the local government (City Corporation) laws, election must be held within 90 days of a seat falling vacant.

The DNCC election was held on April 28, 2015 where Awami League candidate Annisul Huq won the election by a big margin.
