Victory Day celebrated in Bangladesh missions abroad

DHAKA, Dec 17, 2017 (BSS) – The Victory Day was celebrated in Bangladesh missions abroad yesterday amid great festivity and fervor remembering with gratitude millions of freedom fighters who embraced martyrdom to liberate Bangladesh as an independent nation from the Pakistani occupation forces in 1971.

The celebration reached a new height this year following the UNESCO’s recognition of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s historic the 7th March speech as part of world heritage.

The Victory Day celebration began on the premises of Bangladesh missions abroad following hoisting of national flag and playing of national anthem with a renewed pledge to build “Sonar Bangla” (Golden Bengal) imbued with the spirit of the country’s War of Independence.

Homage was also paid to the martyred freedom fighters and Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman prior to beginning the day-long programmes, according to messages received here from Bangladesh missions abroad today.

Besides, messages from President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali and State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam were read out by heads and officials of the missions.

Discussion meetings and cultural functions were organized as part of celebrating the Victory Day in which mission officials, their family members and expatriate Bangladeshis joined in a festive mood wearing Bangladesh’s traditional attire with the combination of red and green.

Children’s art and essay writing competitions highlighting the significance of the day were also organized on the mission premises marking the day.

Bangladesh Permanent Mission in the UN and Bangladesh embassy in Washington D.C. celebrated the day with great festivity and enthusiasm. The day’s programmes included hoisting of national flag, playing national anthem, holding discussions and cultural functions.

According to messages received here by BSS so far, the Victory Day was also celebrated in Bangladesh High Commission in India, Deputy High Commission in Mumbai, Bangladesh missions in Paris in France, Brunei Darussalam, Rome in Italy, Canberra in Australia, Yangon in Myanmar, Hanoi in Vietnam, Tashkent in Uzbekistan, Bangkok in Thailand and Singapore.

Besides, Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Mumbai hosted a film screening of the movie ‘Guerilla’ at National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in Mumbai marking the day.
